mystic realm online (2018)

Mystic Realm Online is a short film about videogames, relationships, and growing up in an online world. The film and game seen within it are loosely based around my own interactions through various digital mediums at a young age, most notably the popular online fantasy role-playing game, RuneScape.

The game seen in the film was created through photo-collages and background art digitally painted by Erin Vest. The trailer for Mystic Realm Online seen in the beginning of the film was made using a combination of green screen photography and digital animation.

​The film was funded through Indiegogo and featured backer rewards including a poster, shirt, and jewel case copy of the film on DVD which were all designed to evoke the special edition and pre-order bonus merchandise that was included with the videogames I purchased in my youth. The merchandise has been shipped domestically in the United States as well as internationally to countries including Canada and Germany.

Mystic Realm Online was nominated for Best Writing in the Spring 2018 Monkey Bread Tree Film Awards where it received praise for its character treatment and ending.
